Air traffic controller

A civil air traffic controller is licensed to keep aircraft apart and to keep traffic moving in an orderly way. Most people qualify first for one kind of unit.

That unit is a tower, an approach unit, or an area centre. The work, the roster, and the endorsement are for that unit. A licence for one of them is not a licence for the other two.

  • Aerodrome control, for the runway, the taxiways, and flights in the circuit.
  • Approach control, for arrivals and departures in the airspace around one or more airports.
  • Area control, for flights en route between those terminal areas.

Who may apply is decided by the employer.
